Built from scratch, not from kits
Jean Preckel began building model boats in 1983 while living on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Although her college degrees are in music and horticulture, her passion for boats began at an early age when her family acquired a sailboat. She finds that building model boats keeps her messing about with boats and allows her to live a self-employed life style that she enjoys. Jean's ship models can be found in museums, yacht clubs, visitors centers and private collections throught the United States.
Jean's custom scale model boats are built from scratch, they are not made from kits. She starts with the line drawings and pictures of a boat. Using construction methods similar to those used in building full sized boats, she constructs a model ship that is scaled exactly to the required size. Jean has built model boats ranging from 6 inches to over 8 feet in length. She uses basswood or white cedar for the hull and mahogany, teak, fir and various other woods for the trim and spars.
Jean builds models of all types of boats: traditional, modern, sail and power. She has built colonial schooners, crabbing skiffs, racing yachts, run-abouts, motor yachts and many other types of vessels. She also restores pond yachts.
